I remember when I started my very first blog, Finsavvy Panda, I was pumped and wanted to learn how to make money with a blog.
One thing I struggled with at the very beginning was deciding what to blog about let alone learning how to monetize my blog at that time.
Just like you, I was SO excited to start a self-hosted blog and share my thoughts, ideas, and stories with the world.
Despite being excited, thrilled, and anxious about writing and posting on my blog, I was felt quite lost and didn’t know where to start.
I eventually knew how to narrow down my blog’s focus and niche down on a few topics, but for some reason, I was still stuck.
Similar to you right now, I didn’t know how to come up with blog post ideas.
Questions like these may pop up in your head:
- “How many blog posts should I post?”
- “How do I write my first blog post?”
- “Am I supposed to introduce myself and who I am in my first blog post?”
- “What are some blog post ideas for my niche?”
I hear ya.
I was in the same shoe as you are now.
But after 3 years of starting my first blog in personal finance, and the second one in lifestyle, I learned a lot about which types of blog posts are popular and which ones are not.
I made many mistakes at the beginning of my blogging journey by writing about things that people didn’t want to read nor cared about.
As a result, I wasted SO much time and ended up removing a lot of older blog posts from my website because nobody wanted to click into my articles.
Once I started writing about things that people wanted to read, my traffic took off and I was able to earn thousands of dollars each month with my blog.
I don’t want you to go through that same initial mistake I made.
That’s why I wrote this blog post so I can help beginners like you come up with plenty of blog post ideas to write about that people actually want to read.
Even if you’ve already started your blog, and you’re searching for more blog post ideas in your niche, this post was written for you too.

Hi Ling Thank you so much. After reading this I feel so much better and at ease. Regarding the my niche, once you start blogging do you stick with one niche or can you do more than one? I can’t choose between health and fitness, food and recipes, personal development and mom and parenting blogs. These are all things I enjoy talking about and also have some good knowledge on these topics.
Hi Claudia!
I’m glad these blog post ideas make you feel so much better and at ease!
All those blog niches you listed are great and popular!
So, a reader of mine actually just asked me this exact same question because she said so many bloggers are saying so many different things about narrowing down vs bring broad. I said this to her…
I know listening to two different views can become very overwhelming and confusing. Here’s the thing – they’re both right in their own ways and it’s just a different view. It all depends on your personality, style and goals.
From my experience, both methods work and the key is finding your target audience.
I actually have two types of blogs. A more general lifestyle approach that writes about almost anything I want, and one that is more focussed on personal finance. Both generate a great income!
I also just started another blog this month that is focussed on blogging for this audience (my 3rd blog and the one you’re reading now).
From what I see, people who are brand new to blogging will likely learn more when they start a blog that is more general because they don’t even know what they want exactly (to begin with) and they don’t know what their audience wants!
Of course, the more focussed you are the better but the problem is a beginner may not truly understand what that means until they go through the experience to see what their readers are responding to. Also, it doesn’t mean that a lifestyle blog is not profitable! I see many lifestyle blogs that do very well and many narrowed down blogs that do very well.
I actually have a blog post here that will help you give you some insights:
https://www.blogsavvypanda.com/what-to-blog-about/
Let me know if this helps! 🙂
P.S. If you are the type of person who can’t stick to just one topic and you’re afraid of running out of ideas, or are you just like to experiment different niches, you’re better off starting off with a more general lifestyle blog and learn on the go. However, if you know that you want to talk about one topic and you are very passionate about it and you know that’s what you’re going to stick with, then start with a more narrowed down topic.
Hi Ling,
I wanted to see if you have a recommendation on how long entry posts should be. I am working on getting my first 8-10 posts ready for my website but wanted to see if you have any advice around the length?
Thanks!
Hi Caren!
Great question! I actually just realized that I answered someone else who asked the same question!
How you write your blog post depends on what you’re going to be writing about. Some are short and some are long. There is no rule as to how long your blog post should be. I have blog posts that are as little as 600 words (it just doesn’t make sense for those to be any longer) and an occasional one as high as 5,000 words (because my readers asked me for more info). I would say the best is to have a minimum of 1,000 words. As long as your blog post answers the readers’ questions and they enjoy your content, then it’s good to go regardless of how many words are on the post.
Don’t think too much about the “word count.” The great thing about blogging is you can always go back and make changes.
