Choosing a topic to blog about might be driving you nuts because there are SO many categories to choose from.
I get it, you are super excited and want to start your blog!
But there’s one little thing holding you back.
You’re just not sure what to blog about.
You are afraid of making the wrong decision thinking what if it doesn’t work out or what if you lose interest.
Well, on the other hand, maybe you do have an idea but you’re struggling to narrow down your focus on a blog topic.
Some of you may even decide to be a little broader by venturing off and starting a “lifestyle blog” because this will allow you to discover yourself and give you the freedom to write about more than just one topic.
I often get readers like you asking me for blog post ideas and how to decide what to blog about that will earn a good income and make money.
So, to help you start your blog and choose the perfect topic or niche, I’m going to hand-hold you and answer your burning questions!
READ ALSO: While you’re going through this post, I also highly recommend reading my guide on how to choose a profitable niche here. In that article, I cover the steps you need to follow that will lead you to the right path of starting a blog in a niche that is monetizable.
By the end of this post, I want you to feel good and be confident with the decision you make!
Don’t forget to save this post on Pinterest here so you can refer back to this blogging lesson! You don’t want to lose or miss out on this information!
What To Blog About?
There are SO many things to blog about and you can make money with almost any blog niche you choose.
Even something as specific as Maneki-Neko lucky cats.
Yes… even when you blog about these Japanese lucky cats!

But of course, I’m not here to tell you to start a blog about Maneki-Neko cats (unless you truly have an interest in them and a solid monetization strategy with the blog).
So, let’s leave the discussion of the Japanese lucky cats for another day. 😊
Now, here are three key points I want you to keep in mind when deciding on a niche and what you want to blog about.
1. Discover Your Passions and Interests
When considering what to blog about, I highly recommend sticking to the topics you genuinely enjoy talking about or writing about.
If you choose a topic for the sake of chasing money alone, and you don’t enjoy the topic, you will quickly burn out, lose interest, and give up on the blog!
I personally made this mistake when I started creating food content. I genuinely enjoy making healthy recipes that would meet all my daily needs of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
But I eventually realized that most people don’t appreciate the healthier versions (they really don’t if the recipe is 100% clean). So, I ended up writing about regular recipes just to cater to the majority. If I had stuck with it, it might have been successful.
But in the end, I lost interest and gave up on that food blog. It didn’t resonate with me because I don’t enjoy cooking standard recipes that aren’t healthy. I couldn’t keep going because it didn’t reflect my values, who I am, or the lifestyle I live.
I primarily cook for nutrition and health rather than taste, so creating mouth-watering recipes with empty calories that appeal to most people was never my passion.
That was just my little example so you can draw from my experience.
By the way, when I say discover and blog about your “passions,” I’m not advising you to choose a topic that only you care about and nobody else does (I will elaborate more about this in the 3rd key point, “market demand”).
To give you a few examples, no one cares about how much fun you had walking your dog at the park, your love for music, or the expensive one-of-a-kind meal you ate for lunch over the weekend.
Unless you are entertaining, inspiring, or helping them with something that has to do with any of those examples, no one will care about what you have to say on the blog! Again, I will elaborate on this again in the 3rd point below.
2. Discover Your Skills and Experience
Think about your skills and experience. What are you good at?
Is there something your friend, mom, or dad would tell you that you’re good at?
On a side note, I want to point out that you DON’T actually have to be “skilled” or “an expert” to start a blog on the topic that you’re passionate about or interested in.
You can treat your blog as a self-learning or self-development journey to learn, grow, and become better at whatever it is that piques your interests!
The best form of learning is teaching someone by going through a journey of experiences.
For example, you could be struggling with your weight and eating habits and you want to blog about your weight-loss journey.
When you start a blog about weight loss or healthy living, you can write about the baby steps you’ve taken to lose some weight.
As a result, this can help your readers who are just like you struggling with the same problem. You don’t have to be the fittest or the healthiest person giving advice to make a positive impact on your readers’ lives! In fact, there are many people who are far from being fit and muscular, and they rather follow an idol, like you, who can understand and relate to them.
Aside from this weight loss journey example, there are many other examples that you can blog about like:
- Becoming more organized
- Learning how to become a first-time mom or dad
- Getting out of debt (whether it be student loans or credit card debt)
- Learning how to DIY and craft
- Achieving financial independence
- Becoming more confident and happier
Believe me when I say you will attract an audience who will want to follow and listen to you despite not being “perfect” or “the best.”
You have a hidden skill and talent that will shine on your blog when you understand your readers’ struggles and remain true to yourself. This will attract an audience who are more similar to you and go through similar struggles!
3. Market Demand
Referring back to the 1st key point, I mentioned that choosing a topic or niche you’re passionate about, or interested in learning more about, is vital. That way, it won’t feel like blogging is a chore or work.
However, when you do choose a blog topic that you’re passionate about, you’ll also want to make sure that there’s a market demand for it.
In other words, will there be people interested in the things you write about in that blog niche?
To help beginners like you, I compiled a list of profitable niches that will help you start a profitable blog.
What To Blog About And Make Money (Choosing A Profitable Niche)
Aside from choosing just a niche or a topic, I often get asked “what can I blog about to make money?”
Yes, we all want to make money and be able to help others too, don’t we? 😊
Well, I can tell you there are many profitable blog niches that are very popular!
I created this list to give you an idea of which topics have the potential to make money!
I’ve done countless hours of research on many blogs that are earning a full-time income with these niches.
Again, you could blog about almost anything and share your experience, knowledge, and tips as long as it inspires, entertains, or helps your readers.
By the way, this list is not in any particular order of importance, or popularity, other than alphabetical.
- Arts, Crafts, and DIY Projects
- Beauty, Fashion, and Make-up
- Career and Personal Development
- Entrepreneurship and Business
- Food and Diet (you can blog specifically about one diet if you like)
- Food, Meal Planning, and Recipes
- Frugal Living
- General Lifestyle Tips
- Graphic Designing
- Health, Fitness, Workout, and Exercises
- Healthy Eating
- Home Organizing or Decluttering
- Home Renovations
- Minimalistic or Zero-Waste Living
- Organizing Your Life (printables, agendas, planners, etc.)
- Parenting and Mommy Blogs
- Personal Finance, Budgeting, and Money Matters
- Positive Mindset and Happiness
- Productivity and Time Management Hacks
- Real Estate
- Relationships (Family, Marriage, Love, etc.)
- Self-Development or Self-Improvement
- Sewing and Crocheting
- Technology and Gadget Reviews
- Travel, Entertainment, and Eats
- Upcycling, Thrifting, and Refurbishing
As you can see, there are so many things you can blog about and this list can go on and on.
You can blog about almost anything as long as you are sincerely interested in that topic.
And reiterating the 3rd key point above, market demand, you need to figure out who your target audience is and make your blog about your reader and how you can help them.
I feel like I’m a broken record here, but I’m always going to mention this again and again.
Your blog needs to be inspiring, motivating, entertaining, or providing a solution to a problem.
3 Questions To Help You Choose Your Perfect Blog Niche
Now that you have an understanding of the 3 key points mentioned above (1. passion, 2. skill/experience, and 3. market demand) along with an idea of which blog niches are profitable, you are now going to choose a niche and decide what to blog about.
To help you choose a niche and decide what to blog about to make money, I want you to answer some of these questions that will help you understand and know yourself a little better.
The more specific and detailed your answers, the better you’ll be able to come up with great ideas that suit you!
- What are your top three interests and topics?
- What do your families, friends, coworkers, and even acquaintances and strangers compliment you on?
- How will your interests and topics help your readers?
Just by answering these 3 short questions, you’ll be able to start your blog, choose the perfect niche, and come up with ideas on what to blog.
Once you’ve gone through the next section’s examples, leave your answers to these 3 questions in the comment box below. I will be more than happy to help you get started with your blog! 😊
Examples to Help You Decide on Your Blog Niche
In this section, I’m going to go through two examples with you to make it easier for you to decide on what to blog about.
The first example focuses on a narrowed-down niche (AKA one topic) whereas the second example includes a few different topics.
Of course, everyone’s answers (including yours) will be different but I will use two of my readers’ examples and go through each one with you to give you an idea.
Example 1 – Narrowed Focus On One Blog Topic:
These are Bailey’s answers, one reader of mine, and gave me permission to share her answers with you:
1. What are your top three interests and topics?
- Home and interior designing
- Salvaging and recreating leftover materials
- Painting and drawing
2. What do your families, friends, coworkers, and even acquaintances and strangers compliment you on?
My family and friends can see that I am really passionate about putting things together and making them look pretty whatever it is. They show appreciation of all my projects. That includes my art, paintings, stylish home décor, and interior design. They all say I should become a home designer!
3. How will your interests and topics help your readers?
My passions will teach my readers how to recycle, reuse, and reinvent abandoned things that other people see as garbage. This is the side of me that loves to build and put things together from a different perspective. I can also teach and help others learn how to make things look good just like store-bought without paying full price! I want to show the world that you can salvage anything and turn it into something fun, useful, and stylish!
Based on Bailey’s answer to the first questions about her interests, you can see that each topic is related to being creative or crafty in some form or way.
Bailey told me that she will be starting a blog that inspires and teaches her readers how to decorate a home beautifully all within a budget.
As you can see, decorating a home on a budget will be her blog niche.
Her love for salvaging and recreating things with leftover material, that would have gone to waste otherwise, reflects her creative and frugal nature.
She knows how to recycle and refurbish items by turning them into something that is useful and stylish for her home.
Bailey will be focused on writing blog posts that help her readers decorate a home and make it look stunning through all sorts of DIY and creative projects without breaking the bank.
Example 2 – Broad Focus on Multiple Blog Topics:
With her permission too, here is an example of Kathy’s, another one of my readers, responses to these questions:
1. What are your top three interests and topics?
- Natural beauty tips on a budget
- Children and teaching them
- Organizing and decorating my home as a fun hobby
2. What do your families, friends, coworkers, and even acquaintances and strangers compliment you on?
I get compliments about my skin and nails and friends ask me what I do to get them naturally. I get a lot of the times compliments about my children’s manners and how well behaved they are when I bring them out. Whenever I host a party at my place, they like my order in my kitchen and living room also the way I design my home. They are surprised at how I don’t need to spend a fortune on my organizing systems, furniture, and decorations because it looks so nice and glamorous.
3. How will your interests and topics help your readers?
I have seen a lot of buzz and people interested about clean beauty and “DIY” your own ingredients from home so I can see myself helping women become aware of toxic chemicals in products and switch to safer alternatives. I believe everyone wants to live a more natural and chemical free life. As a mom to two beautiful children, I also want to teach new moms how I teach my kids to behave and stay calm. Decorating and organizing my home with my kids gives me time to bond with them so I enjoy it as a hobby. It’s another interest I consider starting my blog on so I can teach and inspire others to bring life to and beautify their homes on a tight budget!
Kathy’s answers are completely different from Bailey’s in example 1.
In this second example, you’ll see that Kathy listed 3 different topics and interests that don’t seem to relate to each other – beauty, children, and home organization and decor.
Problem: Kathy told me she was confused and didn’t know how to narrow down her focus.
At one point in our conversation, she even said that she will be afraid of narrowing (or niching) down because she is the type of person who tends to get bored of just one topic. She was also afraid of confusing her readers due to a lack of focus.
She just doesn’t know which topic she likes more.
Solution: Start a blog with a “lifestyle” approach.
You can start a blog and write different topics especially when you’re a beginner with no experience. This would be defined as a “lifestyle” blog.
I know many lifestyle blogs that do well despite having different categories and topics.
The key to starting a lifestyle blog is knowing who your audience is. This is true for any blog you start regardless of it being lifestyle or not.
For example, if you are a college student, you can start a college student lifestyle blog and write many different topics that are tailored to college students such as fashion for college students, quick and easy meals for busy students, time management, and organizing tips for students, saving money tips in college, etc. This will give you the opportunity to learn, write and test different areas to see what sparks your interest!
In Kathy’s case, she confirmed that she will be starting a lifestyle blog for moms.
When you read her answers, you can see she is a mom with many different interests.
She said, “As a mom to two beautiful children, I also want to teach new moms how I teach my kids to behave and stay calm. Decorating and organizing my home with my kids gives me time to bond with them so I enjoy it as a hobby. It’s another interest I consider starting my blog on so I can teach and inspire others to bring life to and beautify their homes on a tight budget!”
Based on that answer, she can create blog posts about parenting or mom tips. She can also include home organization and home décor posts that are tailored to moms.
She also mentioned “I have seen a lot of buzz and people interested about clean beauty and “DIY” your own ingredients from home so I can see myself helping women become aware of toxic chemicals in products and switch to safer alternatives.”
From this statement, she can still write posts that inform women (including moms) about clean beauty products if she wants to test out this niche.
The great thing about starting a lifestyle blog is you get the freedom to write about almost any category/subject you want. At the same time, you’ll also learn a lot a wide variety of different subjects!
This is especially true for those who feel they like to talk about almost everything and can’t seem to stick to just one topic.
The beauty is you can still choose to narrow down and focus on one topic when you gain a little bit of experience. Once you start to understand who your audience is based on your blog traffic, comments, and emails you receive from your readers, you will discover which path to go. And this is not uncommon to see!
Wrap Up On What To Blog About
I hope you found this blog post helpful and informative in helping you decide on a niche and what to blog about.
Whether you decide to really narrow down your focus (remember the Maneki-Neko cats I mentioned at the beginning of the post) or be broad with a lifestyle blog and test out multiple topics to see what will become the right fit for you over time, there isn’t a right or wrong approach to starting your blog.
Instead, the key is focusing on your target audience and offering inspiration, entertainment, or solutions to a problem.

Hi Ling! Here are my answers. I already started my blog but still not sure what should I write about. Thank you for your kindness and help.
WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS? WHAT ARE TOPICS YOU ARE EXCITED TO LEARN ABOUT? LIST 3 TOPICS YOU ENJOY.
1. Website Building with WordPress
2. Computer repairing
3. Dogs and animals
4. Motivational things
WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY COMPLIMENT YOU ON?
My friends and family mostly compliment my computer repairing skills and the designs I make. Some friends tell me I know to be helpful with my kindness and good advice about life.
HOW WILL YOUR TOPIC(S) HELP YOUR READERS?
It will help them get motivated, get tips to repair their small computer issues, start their website alone or with my help
Hi Morvai
Awesome to hear you started your blog! 🙂
It sounds like you’re a tech wiz who’ll excel in this area. You can definitely focus on this aspect on your blog. I see many people offer services online as well so you can look into that by blogging or writing about computer issues or website services which has plenty of opportunities.
Hey, these are my answers ✨ hope it could help the others as well.
1. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE INTERESTS AND TOPICS?
* arts, paintings
* history, culture, places on earth and out of earth
* positive advices of life and mindset
2. WHAT DO YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, COWORKERS, AND EVEN ACQUAINTANCES AND STRANGERS COMPLIMENT YOU ON?
My family would say that I’m good at researching about a particular topic and explain it to them in an understandable way. They also would say that I’m good with painting and arts, they’d always support me and my friends would always want me to sell it or do one for them. My friends used to say I’m good at giving advice and I spread positivity around them. I used to come to a conclusion and help them out when they were in trouble and come up with something positive, either it is their romantic life or their sadness. Since I faced some struggles in my personal life, with health and financially, I always seek those who are in sadness and will try my best to lessen their burdens and make them feel loved and accepted too.
3. HOW WILL YOUR INTERESTS AND TOPICS HELP YOUR READERS?
As I like arts, I could teach them some basic art stuff a beginner needs and the use of different art mediums. I can give out some ideas of painting they could try. Through art, I want my readers to know that they do not have to feel insecure or bad with their outcomes and artworks for Art were not meant to be perfect. Through art, we can always express our feelings too. As for history and places, I wish they could read something interesting and some facts they might not really know all these while and come across something eye-catching and also learn about it. For positive advice and mindset, I wish that it could personally be really beneficial for them, help and put them at ease. Since a lot of students and even adults out there are always having a tough time which maybe no one could understand, I wish I can make them feel like there is positivity in whatever they do no matter what. You can even find the beautiful thing when you’re working with dirt and nothing is bad after all truly.
Hi Shelina
Thanks for taking the time to write your answers here.
I apologize for the delayed response, so thank you for your patience! 🙂
It sounds like you have two directions with your blog. You can start a blog that teaches people how to paint (or draw if you can do that). It can become a blog that’s filled with tons of tutorials, techniques strategies, etc. and I see there are creative people who start a blog for this purpose.
The other direction is starting a blog that is all about positive attitude, advice, and developing a positive mindset. I see a lot of self-improvement blogs that inspire, motivate, and encourage their readers to become a better version of themselves. Examples include:
1. X Habits of Women Who Area Always Positive & Happy
2. X Positive Affirmations To Boost Your Mood
3. X Ways To Become a More Confident Person
4. X Bad Habits You Need To Quit Now
5. X Things You Should Do Before X A.M.
6. X Ted Talks That Will Change Your Life Forever
7. X Self-Esteem Tips For People With Social Anxiety
8. X Ways To Stay Motivated and Achieve Your Goals
9. X Ways To Live a More Intentional Life
10. X Self-Development Books That Will Change Your Life
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions about starting your blog.

Hello Ling, here’s my answer to the sample questions in the article you provided.
1. What are your top three interests and topics?
– anime, drama’s, movie, music reviews.
– fashion, hairstyle and makeup
– interior design, home decor
2. What do your families, friends, coworkers, and even acquaintances and strangers compliment you on?
I am getting compliment whenever I can get the latest update when it comes on those topics I have mentioned (especially the first one.) Also, my friends will always ask my opinion when it comes on style, like mix and match outfit, as well as choosing good design.
3. How will your interests and topics help your readers?
I am looking forward to help my readers to know what are the latest updates with those topics that I have. My main goal is to give them idea of the pros and cons of the topic that I will provide to help them on making decision of which one they want to choose.
Hey Jae
All the topics you choose are great options – they are all popular and lots of people search for them. I think anime is a really cool and popular one! For you to put that as your first one, it must mean you are naturally more interested in it. Fashion and interior design are excellent and very popular options too! I do recommend choosing the one that sparks the most interest to you and sticking with it.
Based on your answer to #3, you are on track with knowing how to help your audience on your blog.
Feel free to let me know which one you decide to go for and if you have any questions about starting your blog. I can’t wait to see you build it!

You can totally blog about motherhood and tie in some coaching and self development tips for moms! You can also include some of your favorite recipes and a list of good lunch or dinner ideas for the family since you said people love what you cook!
As you write your articles, keep in mind what type of mom you are blogging for and think about what struggles that mom is going through so you can prepare content that will help her with her everyday life!
Hi Ling
Here are my answers to your blog post’s questions on what to blog about:
1. Financial freedom. Oh my goodness the way I am just so crazy about getting to a minimum of 10k on my bank account like every month. You have no idea. And the way I’m just so keen on making this a reality, So i can start buying the things I want, investing my money and just watching it grow.
2. Mental health, teaching women especially, about how being in control of their own personal mental health can have a huge impact on their lives. I believe that once the brain is crippled, the body is unfunctional.
3. Relationships. I’ve been told more than once that I give. I’m a great advisor so they say. I give great advice from mental health, finances, relationships and life in general. How to stay positive. How to be okay with not being okay. How to be okay with not being where you want to be at that moment, and how to continue slowly but fast enough for you. How to be confident.
I’m looking to remind my readers that its about “you” before its about someone else. How they can start working on themselves and mind and mental health.
Hey Kaysie
Thanks for sharing your answers!
Based on your interests, I can totally see you write about topics that are all related to mental health or even self development.
All the “how tos” you mentioned are great blog post ideas to begin with. I know you mentioned finance/money and relationships so you can even write about those as long as it ties back to your common theme about “mental health”.
My suggestion is to pick one area and stick with it or tie it back to whichever common theme you choose whether it’s money, relationships or mental health. You can go broad but I don’t recommend going too broad to the point where nothing is related or can be tied back together. It really depends on how you can put a spin on the blog posts you write. By doing this, it will also allow you to test out to see what your audience wants to hear from you once you have more blog posts published.
I don’t want to discourage beginners from starting a “lifestyle” type of blog where they can go really broad because I find that people who have no experience in blogging can learn a lot from this.
From what I see, it can be challenging for some beginners to pick and stick up just one topic if they are unsure of their interests and path in blogging, and that’s why I tell my readers it’s ok to go “broad” at the beginning. Once you do that and figure out your true audience and learn about them, you can go deeper and more narrow later on.
I hope this helps in starting your blog!! 🙂
Ling, this is an amazing post. Thank you! I love your writing style too.
I’m glad you found this blog post helpful! 🙂
Hello!
My name is Joan. I came across your blog accidentally and I subscribed to this blogging course ASAP. It’s really amazing to finally see someone guide this through step by step for free. And I really grateful for that!
I do have a question though, and it would be really great if you get to see this and give some advise on this.
I have been planning on blogging for quite some time. Quite some time because it never is consistent. I do have a general thought about what this blog post is about but not sure if it’s something that will really help people out.
It’s basically about how growing up as teenager to adulthood feels, my point of view on certain things like society, relationship between parents, colleague, self, etc.
My goal is to earn money doing the things I like, and the purpose of wanting to blog is just to share my thoughts to the world, maybe find someone relatable along the way. But if this isn’t something people will look into, then I might just have to think through this again. That is what concern me the most at the moment.
Really grateful for your free course!
Thank you!
Regards,
Joan.
Hey Joan
When you start your blog it is important to have an idea who you want your audience to be. Perhaps you are talking to teenagers or people in college. And you will most likely try to stick with a topic that solves the problem your reader is facing. Most beginners won’t nail this part just yet but they do once they actually start their blogs and write for their audience.
I don’t recommend thinking toooo much into it, and really just go and write what you’re interested in and think about what you enjoy writing about that can help you reader in one way or another. I’m just using a really quick example here like “why are my parents so strict?” may speak to and relate to a lot of teenagers or even college students and you can write a post offering your experience and solution to this problem. That ties well with student lifestyle and family relationships that you mentioned about. Again, that’s just one blog post example. There are so many more related to this topic.
One mistake I see is that beginners get nervous because they aren’t sure who their readers are and what exactly they want to write. Once you start and learn things on the go, you will figure it out!
Let me know if you have any questions about starting your blog!
I am thrilled for you and I can’t wait to see you start your blog, Joan! 🙂
Hey Ling, I’m Anushka and I’m thinking of starting a blog on fashion or DIYs or on beauty hacks.
But I’m totally confused what to write how to start. Can you please give me sample of writing it on these topics?
I’m not from this field so I really don’t know what to write, how to start which para, which sentence, totally confused
I will be glad if u help me out.
Thank you
I have these blog post ideas that will help you!
https://www.blogsavvypanda.com/lifestyle-blog-post-ideas/
https://www.blogsavvypanda.com/beauty-blog-post-ideas/
I am really excited to see you start your beauty and fashion blog! Let me know how it goes!
Ling
Hey Ling
I plan on these topics:
1) natural ways to take care of skin and hair.
2) something related to motivational quotes
3) celebrity lifestyle
My family always compliments me for the natural lifestyle that I follow up. I am a very self-reliance person, I don’t share my emotions with many people that’s why motivational quotes are something that keeps me going.
Usually, in my free time, I love to see what is going on in the lives of celebrities (mainly Bollywood actors).
People can choose their hair and skincare routine at a minimum cost.
I can share my experience of what it’s like to be your own motivation. Like me, many other people are also very keen on what’s going on with the celebrity life and what they wear etc.
Hey Rahee
Those a great topics to write about. You can definitely talk about natural ways to take care of your skin and hair. A lot of people search for these tips online and they do really well. You could even talk about celebrity skin, makeup, and hair – those do well too and people search for them.
Many people love looking for ways to get celebrity-inspired looks on a budget!
You can definitely add posts that have quotes especially ones that are related to beauty and celebrity.
I hope this helps you get started with your blog!
