@David – I have heard that blogs in different foreign languages work well, but I don’t have experience with that, which is why I usually recommend my readers to write in English. In some niches it can be done but I decided to create an blog targeting US instead. SEO is different as I needed to target larger search volumes and this demands more page rank (page authority).

But there are a lot more potential international customers.
